1. Haq (IMDb rating of 7.8)

What do you think a woman would do if her husband marries another woman and abandons her and her three kids? Well, not sure about what others would do, but Shazia Banu decided to fight for her kids and her rights. What followed was a 7-year-long legal battle.

   2. Queen (IMDb rating of 8.1)

When Rani’s fiancé dumps her just a day before the wedding, you would expect her to be devastated and heartbroken, but Rani decides to go on her honeymoon alone, where she discovers herself. 

What follows is a heartwarming journey filled with funny, emotional, and empowering moments that make Queen one of the best women centric movies (in my opinion).

   3. Laapta Ladies (IMDb rating of 8.3)

Two newly married women on a train accidentally exchanged, well, that is the hilarious premise of Laapta Ladies. Beneath the humour, the film questions patriarchy and the expectations society has of women. 

The film is elevated by Ram Sampath’s music.

If you are a sucker for women centric movies, I would highly recommend Laapta Ladies.

    4. Mrs ( IMDb rating of 6.7)

Mrs is a story of every middle-class homemaker woman that we see around ourselves. Mrs is a story of Richa, an Indian classical dancer, who is married to a doctor, and she struggles to adjust to her new domestic responsibilities and wants to fulfill her desires.

   5. Chiraiya (IMDb rating of 5.8)

Is consent not important after marriage? 

We often see this debate in our society. Chiraiya is a story of  Pooja, who is being subjected to marital rape. She tells her sister-in-law Kamlesh about it, and what follows is a fight for her rights, dignity, and bodily autonomy.

  6. Gangubai Kathiwadi ( IMDb rating of 7.8)

Sold to a brothel by the man she loved, Ganga refused to remain a victim and became a powerful woman to rule that world. This is the journey of naive, innocent Ganga, who went on to become Gangubai Kathiwadi, a strong, powerful woman.

Gangubai Kathiwadi is definitely worth watching.

  7. BulBul (IMDb rating of 6.2)

A child bride grows into a mysterious woman surrounded by rumours of something supernatural haunting her village.

Bulbbul is visually stunning, emotionally powerful. If you enjoy stories with strong female characters and a touch of mystery and horror.

   8. Delhi Crime (Season 1) ( IMDb rating of  8.4 )

Based on the Nirbhaya Case, the case that shook the nation, Delhi crimes show the aftermath of the rape. The series follows DCP Vartika Chaturvedi and her team as they race to identify and arrest the perpetrators, while the whole nation is out on the streets. 

To me, this series was absolutely heart-wrenching, but  I definitely recommend you to watch it.

   9. Mardaani 2 ( IMDb rating of  7.3)

A psychopath is raping and murdering innocent women, and police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy vows to catch him. This cat-and-mouse game keeps the film gripping throughout.

This is definitely my all-time favourite among the women centric movies.

  10. Piku (IMDb rating of  7.6)

Have you ever felt exhausted balancing family responsibilities and your own ambitions? If yes. Then you’ll definitely relate to Piku. This film captures the complicated, funny, and sometimes frustrating relationship between an independent daughter and her aging father.
