Botox: The New Normal for Women?

A few years ago, Botox was largely associated with Hollywood celebrities and the ultra-rich, but in recent times, it has become increasingly common amongst Bollywood actresses, social media influencers, and, to some extent, also among normal people, all of them openly discussing it as casually as skincare routines.

While Botox is a personal choice, it also raises important questions: Is it just another beauty treatment, or is it a woman feeling the pressure to meet the unrealistic beauty standards set by social media?

What is Botox?

It is a cosmetic treatment that involves injecting a purified substance into facial muscles to effectively reduce fine lines and wrinkles. The procedure takes 15-30 minutes, and the results usually last between 3 and 5 months.

It is most popularly used it for

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet around the eyes
  • Wrinkles

In India, Botox for the full face typically costs:

AreaApproximate Cost
Forehead lines₹8,000–₹20,000
Crow’s feet (eyes)₹8,000–₹18,000
Frown lines₹8,000–₹20,000
Full face₹20,000–₹60,000+

The rise of Preventive Botox

Earlier, it was mostly associated with women in their 40s or 50s, but in recent years, an increasing number of women in their 20s and 30s are opting for it to delay the appearance of wrinkles before they appear. This practice is often referred to as preventive Botox.

Side effects of Botox

Side effects of this Botox don’t necessarily happen to everyone; it depends on one’s body, the injector’s technique, and the dosage. Here are some common side effects:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Discomfort or pain
  • Dry mouth
  • Head ache

Why is Botox so popular?

Social media has played a major role in normalizing cosmetic procedures. Influencers and actors openly share their experiences, while beauty filters constantly present flawless, wrinkle-free faces.

For actresses, the pressure is very real. Actresses in Bollywood are expected to look young. As actresses age, they often face greater competition from younger performers, creating pressure to maintain a youthful appearance.

Bollywood director Mohit Suri, during the promotion of Saiyaara, said he struggled to find actresses who had not undergone any form of cosmetic procedure. This highlights how widespread these treatments have become.

choice or pressure?

Many supporters of cosmetic procedures argue that it is just another form of self-care. If a person wants to change their appearance and feels more confident as a result, that should be their choice.

However, critics argue that the increasing popularity of Botox reflects unrealistic beauty standards, particularly for women.

The Bigger Question

Such cosmetic procedures in themselves are not necessarily the problem. The more important question is why aging has become something many women feel they need to prevent rather than embrace.

Women should have the freedom to make choices about their own bodies. At the same time, younger girls should grow up knowing that wrinkles, aging, and changing appearances are normal parts of life, not flaws that need to be corrected.

At the same time, many women who choose Botox reject the idea that these beauty standards affect them. They argue that Botox is no different from hair colouring or makeup. This is the personal choice that makes them feel confident.

Personally, I believe there is nothing wrong with choosing a cosmetic procedure if that makes you feel more confident. The concern is that if teenage girls opt for this treatment, they feel they are not attractive enough compared to the person they saw online. In those cases, the conversation should not only be about cosmetic procedures but also about the unrealistic beauty standards promoted on social media. Confidence should come from self-acceptance, not from the pressure to look like someone else.
